An Introduction to Google Plus

Have you gotten an invite to Google Plus yet, Google’s entry in the social media sweeps? I’ve gotten mine and so far I’m liking what I see.

Google Plus appears to be about choice. You can choose who you want to share what with by organizing people into groups called Circles, while Sparks, the stream feature of Google Plus feeds “just the stuff you’re really into”. A third feature, Hangouts, lets you set up a group event whenever you like.

you can also do pretty much everything that you can do on Facebook, too, such as store documents, add photos and chat with people. And of course Google Plus is integrated with Google’s search engine and gmail.

Will it turn out to be a good networking or business marketing tool? Too early to say. Right now Google is asking businesses to hold off joining until they release the business pages part of Google Plus.

It’s also too early to say if going toe-to-toe with Facebook is a savvy business move, but on the ‘Net novelty is always a good thing and think there are enough people fed up with Facebook that Google Plus might have staying power – especially since Google has such deep pockets.

Google Plus is in beta testing so an invite is the only way to join. Once you get an invite and are signed up, Dan Rowinski’s How to Use Google Plus (ReadWriteWeb) is a good introduction to getting started with it.
