3 Degrees that are Good for Entrepreneurs

As an entrepreneur, it would be safe to assume that a business degree would be the best educational preparation for your entrepreneurial endeavors. However, there are additional degree programs that would assist you in reaching your goals.

There are many different degrees, aside from general business, that would equip you with the skills, tools and knowledge necessary for success in starting a business. Here are three examples of other degrees to actively consider:

1.       Law - I never would have thought that after graduating from a law school in New England I would be starting a business, but my law background was actually a great foundation for learning how to run a business. I learned the ins and outs of law and was made aware of the legal aspect that must go behind every business. Having a solid of understanding of litigation and business law and ethics made for smooth sailing, and saved me the money of hiring a lawyer, throughout my business career.

2.       Psychology When a friend asked me what kind of degree he should get using the gi bill education benefits, I suggested he try a degree in psychology if his goal was to start his own business because he would have a deeper understanding of how his customers think.

Understanding consumer mindset, trends and emotional response tendencies, allows a business owner to better predict purchasing trends and consumer behavior. A psychology degree will teach you about human tendencies and thought patterns, and thus, give you insight into how you can best advertise and appeal to your target audience.

3. Marketing – Marketing is an incredible background to have as an entrepreneur. You’ll have a solid understanding of what works and what doesn’t when it comes to marketing your product or service to consumers. A lot of companies pay tons of money to hire a marketing manager, and if you are just starting off and want to save every dime, you could use the skills you learned in school to help market your business. With the degree, you will be able to develop clever and effective marketing ploys that will attract customers to your product or service.
