Business Free Model

It has been a long time since we last spoke about relationships and content building. Chris here, from The Traffic Blogger, and today I’d like to focus on the upcoming “World Media Awards”. Have you heard of this before? Honestly, until Gail mentioned it to me yesterday I had never even heard of this event. I had wanted to write a boring post about creating forums for your blog, but instead GrowMap insisted that I walk the beat and investigate this intriguing awards ceremony.

You know what the most interesting part of this whole thing is? All the awards are blogging awards: “Best Blogging Tips”, “Best Celebrity Blogger”, “Best Entertainment Blog”… etc. I know what you’re thinking, Chris, those should all go to you, but seriously, there are other people in the blogosphere who deserve a little credit besides myself. That being said, the more I read about this event the more interesting it became to me.

The list of judges was impressive; it seems like everyone wants to get in on being a part of The World Media Awards. My curiosity became insatiable. I had to know one thing: where’s the revenue? All things come down to money, even with non-profit events such as this one, and so I dug tirelessly throughout their site and eventually found it: this is basically a contest where contestants have the opportunity to advertise the event within their blogs. Readers who click to learn about the event will be taken to a page that eventually advertises two make money online books for bloggers. It isn’t obvious but it is there and definitely part of the motivation for running this event. There’s also ticket sales, but I have no idea whether they are breaking even or making money from those. Of course, there’s even the opportunity for sponsors both offline and online for the event.

Very rarely have I seen this business model used correctly and in such a way that both contestants and readers are happy with the results. In fact, I like to call it a “Business Free Model” because it’s so difficult to pin down where the actual business aspects reside. Most people will be ignorant of the fact that this contest is going to make quite a bit of money.

I said that bloggers had the opportunity to advertise the event on their blogs, and to that end The World Media Awards has a banner for them to place on their sites. This banner does two things: directs readers to the page where they can get two ebooks as well as advertise to other bloggers that this event exists. All in all it’s brilliant marketing that we can all learn from.

Events go viral when there is incentive for readers to “spread the word.” This incentive could simply be humor, as is the case with most viral youtube videos, or, the incentive could be valuable information that’s fun to spread to friends. That’s the key with The World Media Awards, they look fun. It’s fun to say that you entered a contest where you could potentially win an award. Not only is it fun, but there’s the chance of networking with others both offline and online thanks to the contest aspect.

The World Media Awards look like they are going to be a great networking activity with some fun and entertainment mixed in as well. Make no mistake however, this is a money making opportunity that we should all try to learn from. This ceremony is giving valuable content and facilitating networking to a group of bloggers in exchange for publicity and revenue.
